My Alabama Flag FaceMask
Before the hearing, the three of us were standing together talking when my ex arrived. He deliberately walked between us, forcing us to step back to let him pass. I could smell the usual strong alcohol fumes on his breath as he passed. It was so thick I had to wave it away from my face with my hand. “Whew!” I told the guys. “Don’t light a match!” We all laughed. I was able to relax a little, because I figured only a nervous idiot would get himself boozed up before a court hearing. On the stand, my son and I faced the bully who had made our lives so miserable for nine years. I was still afraid he might carry out the threats he’d made against me, such as killing me or kidnapping my kids. I felt it was more important to support my son as he stood up to the man who had bullied and tormented him throughout his life. My ex tried his best to intimidate us by using an accusing tone of voice and twisting the events of that day to fit his version of what happened. His attitude was one of contempt, as though the charge was a minor misunderstanding that had been blown grossly out of proportion by a hysterical, unstable woman and her lying kid. As he strutted back and forth in his cheap suit and scruffy beard, I had to suppress a smile. I thought, “No matter how much you think you learned from those ‘jailhouse lawyers’ (other convicts) in the Big House, don’t confuse your knowledge with a bonafide law degree, or compare yourself to law professionals who do this stuff for a living.”
