The very last "classic" battleship vs. battleship engagement took place in 1944, more specifically on Oct. 25 at Surigao Strait, during the complex Leyte Gulf Campaign. It stood between the so-called Southern Striking Force of VAdm. Nishimura Shoij (IJN) and RAdm Jesse Oldendorf (USN). Nishimura had at his disposal two elderly BBs and one heavy cruiser (CA), while Oldendorf, managing to cross the enemy's "T" possessed no fewer than six BBs, some of them previously sunk at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, such as California, Tennessee and West Virginia.
